VET in Schools

VET in Schools is nationally recognised training that is available to secondary school students as part of their normal school curriculum. This can be done through:

  • Institution-based courses or subject programs
  • School-based traineeships or apprenticeships where students become paid employees under a training contract while still at school.

Students completing a VET in schools program have the opportunity to complete their secondary education with:

  • A HSC
  • A University Entrance Score (depending upon the course undertaken)
  • Practical work skills and credit towards, or attainment of, a VET qualification

VET in Schools improves the employability skills of young people, equipping them to value the area of work they are involved in and enabling them to either find employment or go on to further vocational education or university.

Students enrolled in VET programs may also combine study and employment through School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships which allow students to do their HSC concurrently with an apprenticeship or traineeship.

The importance of this pathway is highlighted by the fact that around 70% of Australians do not wish, or are unable, to go to university. As a result, VET in Schools has developed from a marginal activity into an established part of senior secondary school education in Australia.
